Locating the Self: The Poetics and Politics of Identity
Course Description
What is identity? How do poets conceive of, articulate, and depict in their work the various identities they inhabit vis-à-vis class, race, nationhood, religion, gender and sexuality? This poetry workshop invites students to locate themselves within the sociopolitical framework of our day—as artists, writers, and citizens—and to consider the role that our personal and collective identities play in the creative work we generate. Course assignments will include close reading of poetry by a diverse range of poets and guided writing assignments.
Charif Shanahan Receives National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship

This week, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Charif Shanahan, a Jones lecturer in the English Department at Stanford, with a creative writing fellowship. Shanahan, a former Wallace Stegner fellow, was one of 35 poets who received the 2019 Creative Writing Fellowship, according to the National Endowment for the Arts.

Charif Shanahan
Jones Lecturer in Poetry, Creative Writing Program, Department of English.
Shanahan is the author of Into Each Room We Enter without Knowing (Southern Illinois University Press, 2017), winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry and the Publishing Triangle’s Thom Gunn Award. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship; the Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Poetry; a Fulbright Senior Scholar Grant to Morocco; and residency fellowships from Cave Canem Foundation, MacDowell Colony, Millay Colony for the Arts, La Maison Baldwin in St Paul, France, and the Rauschenberg Foundation, among other honors and recognitions. Former Programs Director of the Poetry Society of America, he has taught poetry at California College of the Arts (CCA), Collegio di Milano (Italy), Dartmouth College, New York University, and Stanford University.
